LifeProof, how Fay designs for real life
For Fay, recognition does not depend on a single symbol. The metal hook, the 4 Ganci and the brand’s workwear roots continue to hold an important place in its history, but they are no longer enough to explain everything Fay has become.
The idea of LifeProof Favorites offers another way of looking at the brand. Rather than referring simply to the durability of a garment, it can be understood through the way clothing is actually used: moving between places, adding or removing layers, and shifting from an informal setting to a moment that calls for a more defined way of dressing.
Function, then, is no longer tied to one type of product. It becomes part of the wardrobe and adapts to the way clothes are actually lived in.
Function comes first, then the wardrobe evolves
“Forged in the USA, cooled in Italy” is the phrase Fay uses to sum up its roots. It brings together two sides of the brand’s identity: American workwear, shaped by practical needs, and its later Italian reinterpretation.
This background helps explain why closures, protection and practicality have played such an important role in the brand. In workwear, every detail has a purpose. When that same logic moves into a different context, however, the garment changes with it.
Proportions, materials, weights and ways of wearing evolve. Constructions can become lighter, lines cleaner and the overall attitude more urban. Function remains, but it does not necessarily need to be the first thing you notice.
This is where LifeProof becomes an interesting way of reading Fay: the aim is not to create a garment for one specific occasion, but clothing that can find its place across different situations.
The hook remains, the wardrobe expands
The 4 Ganci inevitably remains one of the styles most closely associated with Fay. What makes the brand’s evolution more interesting, however, is everything that has developed around this icon.
Fay Travel also shows how travel has become one of the contexts through which the brand expresses its approach to dressing. Alongside outerwear, polo shirts, trousers, denim, shirts and dresses gradually shift the focus towards a more complete wardrobe.
Within these categories, the connection to Fay’s functional origins can be less immediately visible. A hook is not always needed to recognise the brand’s approach: the weight of a fabric, its relationship with the body, the ease of layering and the way a garment works alongside more structured or relaxed pieces can be just as important.
LifeProof therefore becomes an idea that runs through the wardrobe rather than remaining confined to outerwear alone.
Eight styles that map out the Fay universe
Broadening the perspective does not mean leaving the icons behind. On the contrary, the way Fay groups some of its most recognisable styles shows how the same history has produced different expressions in menswear and womenswear.
In menswear, Fay highlights four key styles:
- 4 Ganci
- Double Coat
- Morning Coat
- Blazer
In womenswear, the key styles are different:
- 3 Ganci
- Virginia Coat
- Toggle
- Romantic
Taken together, these styles show that Fay does not rely on a single shape to define its identity. Menswear and womenswear share the same origins, but express them through distinct styles.
From icons to the way a look comes together
The difference between the two wardrobes becomes even clearer when the focus shifts from historic styles to the rest of the collection.
In menswear, Fay brings together outerwear, polo shirts, trousers and more structured pieces, moving across different levels of formality. A polo can change the tone of an outfit, trousers can give it greater definition, while a functional jacket can sit within the same look without creating a rigid divide between casual and formal.
Rather than dividing the wardrobe into fixed occasions, Fay works with the transitions between different levels of formality.
In womenswear, the range becomes even broader. Denim, trousers, shirts, dresses and lighter pieces allow a look to come together without always placing outerwear at its centre. Fay’s character can emerge through the material, the proportion or the relationship between more structured elements and more relaxed ones.
Menswear and womenswear, therefore, are not two versions of the same wardrobe. They begin with a shared history, but differ in their categories, combinations and ways of building a look.
It is precisely when the hook is no longer necessarily at the centre that the full breadth of Fay’s language becomes clear.
When LifeProof met the sea
The Spring/Summer 2026 Collection offered a clear example of Fay’s ability to move into a different setting without losing its defining references.
With Seaside stories, Fay turned to the sea and sailing for its Spring/Summer 2026 narrative. Light, textures and lightweight yarns changed the mood of the wardrobe, revealing a side of the brand far removed from the more rugged imagery associated with its workwear roots.
Even within this setting, Fay’s signature references remained recognisable. The men’s 4 Ganci and women’s 3 Ganci found their place within a maritime setting, reworked in lighter fabrics and styled for warmer weather.
It was precisely this contrast that made Seaside stories interesting: Fay lightened materials and constructions, changed the setting and the way the pieces were worn, without giving up the elements that define its identity.
Seaside stories therefore showed how lightness, texture and context could transform the wardrobe while maintaining its connection with the brand’s history.
As the warmer season came to an end, that interpretation gave way to different needs, with heavier fabrics, layering and greater protection becoming more relevant. The context and seasonal requirements changed, rather than the principle behind Fay’s approach to design.
The Fay menswear and womenswear selection at Pier Abbigliamento
The Pier Abbigliamento selection brings the focus back to the garments and materials currently available.
In the Fay menswear selection, Bermuda shorts in stretch cotton sit alongside a stretch nylon overcoat and a nylon trench coat. These different pieces move from the lightness of informal dressing to the protection of outerwear, while maintaining a focus on movement and practicality.
The Fay womenswear selection broadens the wardrobe further. A jacket in technical poplin is joined by linen Bermuda shorts, trousers, denim, shirts and dresses, bringing together different materials, weights and levels of structure.
The two Pier Abbigliamento selections do not represent the entire Fay universe and each has its own characteristics. They do, however, show how a culture built around function can continue to express itself well beyond the brand’s signature outerwear.
